There’s certainly no shortage of famous vampires. Dracula has been haunting readers for nearly 130 years, while Anne Rice’s Lestat, Stephenie Meyer’s Edward Cullen and countless others have ensured that the undead never stay buried for very long. But some of the most intriguing vampire stories today aren’t necessarily the ones you’ll find stacked on the front table of your local bookstore.
Independent and lesser-known authors have been putting their own spin on vampire fiction, often mixing the familiar mythology with everything from murder mysteries and dystopian fantasy to Greek mythology, medical thrillers and supernatural romance. And because many of these books are independently published, there’s a sense of exploration involved: scroll a little deeper through Amazon and you may discover an entire series — or an author — you’ve never encountered before.
The following nine novels are exactly that kind of discovery. Among them are a detective trying to solve a vampire murder immediately after becoming one herself, a medical examiner confronted with a corpse that refuses to stay dead, an immortal who discovers vampires may not actually be immortal, and a woman paid to become a vampire king’s personal blood donor.
